## Introduction

Bypass finish installation starts with a finished closet opening. Install the track, hang the door slabs, fit the floor guides and recessed cup pulls, then adjust the doors so they slide smoothly. For the complete system and hardware layout, see [How to Install Bypass Doors](/learn/install-bypass-doors/).

## Before You Begin

Start with the finished opening. This finish-install stage includes the track, slabs, guides and cups. Confirm the following prerequisites before you begin.

### Prerequisites

- Drywall complete and painted
- Flooring installed
- Closet framing finished and [plumb](/glossary/layout-and-shop-talk/#plumb-level-square-condition)

### What You Need To Know

When you install bypass doors, understanding these core techniques will save you time and prevent callbacks. If your opening is better suited to folding hardware instead of sliding hardware, see our guide on [installing bifold doors](/learn/install-bifold-doors/) before you commit to a track layout.

- Ensure track alignment is level and plumb to prevent door binding
- Use a 2 1/4 inch hole saw for bypass cups to ensure proper fit
- Check for smooth operation by sliding doors back and forth

## Tools

- Drill - for securing tracks and guides
- Level - to ensure tracks are installed plumb and level
- 2 1/4 inch hole saw - for bypass cups installation
- Measuring tape - for accurate measurements

## Materials

- Bypass door kit - typically includes tracks, guides, and hardware
- Bypass doors - ensure they match the [opening size](/glossary/doors/#rough-opening)
- Spray foam - optional for sealing gaps

## Installation Steps

### Step 1. Measure the Opening

Start by measuring the width and height of the closet opening to ensure your bypass doors fit correctly.

- Measure width at top, middle, and bottom
- Measure height on both sides

### Step 2. Install the Track

Secure the top track to the [header](/glossary/doors/#header-king-stud-trimmer-jack-stud) of the closet opening, ensuring it is level.

- Use a level to check alignment
- Screw the track into place using the provided hardware

### Step 3. Install the Guides

Position and install the floor guides to keep the doors aligned and prevent swinging.

- Ensure guides are centered under the track
- Screw guides into the floor

### Step 4. Hang the Doors

Lift each bypass door onto the track, ensuring the rollers are securely seated.

- Check for smooth sliding operation
- Adjust roller height if necessary

### Step 5. Install Bypass Cups

Use a 2 1/4 inch hole saw to install bypass cups for ease of door operation.

- Drill holes as per the door manufacturer's specifications
- Secure cups in place

### Step 6. Final Adjustments

Make any final adjustments to ensure the doors slide smoothly and are aligned properly.

- Adjust the track or guides if necessary
- Check for any obstructions or misalignments

## Pro Tips

**Pro Tip:** "Hang bypass slabs, install guides, install cups." - Joel

**Pro Tip:** Use a 2 1/4 inch hole saw for bypass cups to ensure proper fit in predrilled holes.

## Common Mistakes

- **Mistake:** Misaligned tracks - This can cause doors to bind or jump the track. Always use a level to ensure alignment.
- **Mistake:** Incorrect guide placement - Guides that are not centered can cause doors to swing. Double-check positioning before securing.

## QC / Punch Checklist

- Verify doors slide smoothly without binding
- Ensure tracks and guides are securely fastened
- Check that bypass cups are installed and functional
- Confirm that all hardware is installed and adjusted correctly
