## 6'8" Cased-Opening Layout

This is the 6'8" variant of the wood-jamb [cased opening](/learn/install-cased-opening/) in new construction. It is an open passage without a door, hinges or hardware. Use [How to Install a Cased Opening](/learn/install-cased-opening/) for the tools, stock selection, floor assembly, shim pattern, fastening and casing handoff. Those instructions apply to this height too.

## Confirm the Head and Floor Elevations

Check the plans and builder's notes, and align the jamb head with nearby door jamb heads where the layout calls for it. The nominal 6'8" designation does not mean that the rough-opening header is 80 inches above the finished floor. Keep the rough header, jamb head and finished clear opening distinct.

The flooring can be installed, or its finished elevation must be known. Cut the jamb legs to reach below the future finished floor surface. Confirm the intended clear opening and head alignment before cutting the assembly.

## Follow the Shared Installation Method

Use one common jamb depth for all three pieces. Assemble the jamb on the floor, then set, shim and nail it with five side shim points per leg. Follow the measurements and fasteners in [How to Install a Cased Opening](/learn/install-cased-opening/) rather than a separate height-based method.

Case both faces with a 3/16-inch reveal and tight glued miters. Putty and sand the wood joints; the painter handles nail holes, outside caulking and coatings. [How to Case One Side of a 6'8" Door](/learn/case-one-side-door-68/) teaches the full basic casing procedure.
