In residential new construction, garage steps are an essential element for ensuring safe and easy access between the garage and the home. These steps are typically installed once the garage floor and threshold are in place, but before the final finishes are applied. Properly constructed steps are crucial for meeting building codes related to step height and depth, ensuring long-term durability, and providing secure access for homeowners. By installing these steps early in the construction process, we ensure they are integrated seamlessly with the home's design, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Tools Needed:
Hand tools
Level
Skill saw
Framing square with stops
Saw horses
Screw gun
Glue gun
Calculator
Supplies:
Construction adhesive
Deck screws
Materials:
2 x 12
2 x 4
Quality Check Criteria:
All steps are the same height and under 7 3/4".
Process Building Garage Steps:
Preparation: Place a wood apron under the garage door. The apron should be the same width as the brick mold and extend at least 15" down. Ensure the level is under the threshold, then measure from the concrete to the top of the level. Make sure the level is perfectly horizontal as you get your measurement.
Measure and Mark: Measure the distance from the garage door to the floor, ensuring you're 12"-24" away from the garage door to account for sloping. Once you have your measurement, divide it by the number of steps required. If your calculation exceeds 7.75", you will need to add an extra step. Keep in mind that the final step usually goes from the garage floor to the house.
Determine Stringers: If you calculated 3 steps, you will only build two. The first top step will be placed into the apron. Use 2x12s to create the stringers. You can accomplish this by placing the long side of the framing square on the outside of the board, making sure that the long side represents the tread length (usually 10") and the short side represents the rise height. Draw out your steps on the bottom stringer and ensure they fit the calculated rise height.
Cut and Assemble: After marking the steps on the stringer, cut out the treads and remove the calculated thickness. Secure them on the floor under the door, aligning the stringers evenly and scribing them to the floor as necessary. Once this is completed, place the stringers on each side of the apron, ensuring they are level.
Install Treads: Cut a 2x4 to go between the stringers, ensuring the middle stringer is leveled on both sides. Screw everything together and make sure all steps have a 1/2" overhang on each side. Lastly, measure each step and verify that they meet the required dimensions.
By following these steps, you can ensure that the garage or patio steps are built correctly, meeting all height regulations and providing a secure entryway.
