Once the handrail is constructed, the next step is securely mounting it to the wall. This step involves attaching brackets along the length of the stair wall to support the handrail. Proper installation ensures the handrail remains stable and meets building code requirements. The number of brackets used is essential for calculating the cost to the customer, as we charge based on bracket count.

Tools Needed

  • Stud Finder

  • Hand tools

  • 4'-6' Level

  • Drill with ⅛" bit

  • Impact Driver with Phillips Bit

Materials

  • Handrail Brackets

Quality Check Criteria:

  • Brackets are secured to studs for maximum stability

  • The handrail is aligned with a consistent pitch and height

  • Meets stair code requirements (handrail height 34" to 38" off step nose)

Procedure for Mounting a Handrail to the Wall

  1. Set the Handrail Pitch: Place your level flush with the nose of the bottom step. Plumb the level straight up and draw a vertical line. Measure up from the bottom step nose to 33½" (or as required by code) and mark. Repeat this step for the top step. Use a chalk line to connect these marks, providing a consistent guideline that establishes the pitch for the handrail.

  2. Mark Stud Locations: Use a stud finder to locate and mark studs along the chalk line. Properly spaced brackets must be anchored to studs to ensure the handrail’s stability and durability.

  3. Attach Brackets: Align the top front screw hole of each bracket with the chalk line. Attach each bracket using the large screws provided, securing them into the wall studs. Space the brackets evenly along the handrail’s length, ensuring proper support. Use your judgment for the number and placement of brackets based on the rail length and customer’s safety needs.

  4. Position and Secure the Handrail: Place the constructed handrail onto the mounted brackets. Check that the handrail extends slightly beyond the top and bottom steps, if required by design. Ensure the rail is level and aligned with the chalk line.

  5. Finalize Bracket Attachment: Predrill holes into the handrail for the half-moon shaped brackets, using an ⅛" drill bit. Secure these brackets with small screws, starting with the top and bottom brackets. This will allow you to position the handrail accurately, then secure the middle brackets to keep the rail straight and stable.

Reporting

Record the number of brackets used for accurate billing to the customer.
