Common Carpentry Questions We Hear

Before reaching out, check if your question is answered below. These are the carpentry questions we get asked most often.

Getting Started

Where should a beginner start with finish carpentry?

Start with our How to Install a Pre-Hung Door guide — it’s the most common task and teaches fundamental skills you’ll use everywhere. Then try baseboard installation. For a full overview, read How to Trim a House Start to Finish.

What tools do I need to get started?

Every guide includes a complete tools list. At minimum, you’ll need a miter saw, nail gun (or hammer and nails), tape measure, level, and pencil. Our individual guides specify exactly which tools the task requires. For tool recommendations, Fine Homebuilding’s tool guides are another great resource.

Can a DIY homeowner follow your guides?

Absolutely. While we write from a professional perspective, every guide breaks the process into clear, followable steps. If you can read directions and handle basic tools, you can get professional-quality results.

About Our Guides & Site

Do you do carpentry work for hire?

We’re an active finish carpentry company, but this site focuses on sharing knowledge. We don’t take on projects through the website — our guides help you do the work yourself or understand what good work looks like when hiring a professional.

How fast do you respond to emails?

We’re on job sites during the day, so we typically respond within 24-48 hours. If you have an urgent carpentry question about a project in progress, include “URGENT” in your subject line and we’ll prioritize it.

Can I share or link to your guides?

Please do. Share them with your crew, your apprentices, on forums, wherever. That’s exactly why we made them free and public. A link back to the guide is always appreciated so people can find the full version.

Best Carpentry Resource Online

I’ve been hanging doors for 15 years and still picked up new tricks from the pre-hung door guide. The pro tips alone saved me time on my next job. This is how trade knowledge should be shared.

Saved Me From a Costly Mistake

Was about to install my own baseboard and had no idea about the order of operations. The baseboard guide walked me through everything including tools I didn’t know I needed. Turned out great.

Finally — Real Job Site Knowledge

Most online carpentry content is surface-level. These guides read like they were written by someone who actually does the work every day — because they were. The stair skirt board guide is the best I’ve found anywhere.

Using These to Train My Crew

I run a small trim crew and send new guys to these guides before their first day. The closet shelf series and the door hanging guide have cut my training time in half. Wish I had this resource 10 years ago.
