30 Years as a Professional Finish Carpenter.
One Mission: Teach
It Right.
Our Story
From Job Site Training to a Free Resource for Everyone
A professional finish carpenter doesn’t just build — they teach. Let’s Build Stuff started not as a website, but as a way to pass down real-world techniques to the next generation of craftsmen.
After 30 years working as a professional finish carpenter in residential new construction, we got tired of explaining the same techniques over and over every time a new crew member joined the team. So we started writing them down — step by step, tool by tool, the exact way we do the work on every job site.
What started as internal training docs for our crews turned into something bigger. We realized that if these guides were valuable to our guys, they’d be valuable to everyone — apprentices learning the trade, experienced carpenters picking up new tricks, and homeowners tackling their own projects.
So we made them public. All of them. For free.

What Makes Our Guides Different
Written by a Professional Finish Carpenter
Every guide reflects how we actually do the work — not theory, not textbook answers. These are battle-tested techniques refined across thousands of homes in residential new construction.
Complete, Not Partial
Every guide includes tools needed, materials list, step-by-step instructions, pro tips from decades of professional finish carpenter experience, quality check criteria, and troubleshooting for common problems.
Free. Always.
No paywalls, no premium tiers, no email gates. We built these guides to train our own people. Sharing them costs us nothing and helps everyone in the trade do better work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who writes these guides?
Every guide is written by a professional finish carpenter with 30+ years of experience in residential new construction. These aren’t AI-generated articles or rewritten content from other sites — they’re documented versions of the exact techniques we use on job sites every day.
Are these guides really free?
Yes, 100% free with no catches. No email signup required, no premium tier, no paywall. We originally wrote these to train our own crews. Making them public costs us nothing extra and helps raise the bar for the whole trade.
What skill level are your guides written for?
All levels. Each guide is detailed enough for someone doing the task for the first time, but includes professional finish carpenter techniques that even experienced carpenters find valuable. We write them the same way we’d train a new crew member — thorough, practical, and no-nonsense.
Can DIY homeowners use these guides?
Absolutely. While we write from a professional perspective, every guide breaks down the process into clear, followable steps. If you can read directions and handle basic tools, you can get professional-quality results. We include tools lists and materials so you know exactly what you need before you start.
Where should I start?
If you’re new to the trade, start with How to Install a Pre-Hung Door — it’s the most common task in finish carpentry and teaches fundamental skills you’ll use everywhere. For a big-picture view, check out How to Trim a House Start to Finish. For additional industry insights, Fine Homebuilding is another excellent resource.
Will you be adding more guides?
Yes. We’re continuously documenting more techniques from our day-to-day work. As we encounter tasks worth teaching, we write them up. We’re also improving existing guides with better detail and additional pro tips based on questions and feedback we receive.
