Finish Carpentry Cheat Sheets and Printable References

These finish carpentry cheat sheets are designed for carpenters working in residential new construction. Each one is a free, printable reference covering real-world dimensions, installation details, and step-by-step checklists that we use daily on our own job sites. Download them, print them out, and keep them in your truck or tool bag for quick reference on the job.

No fluff — just the numbers and details you need when you need them. Every cheat sheet is based on the same standards and procedures we follow at Sun’s Up Construction, where we trim and shelve new homes full-time across the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

Closet Shelving Cheat Sheets #

Quick reference guides for closet shelving layouts, dimensions, and installation details. These finish carpentry cheat sheets cover everything from standard bedroom closet heights to detail drawings for shelf cleat attachment. Print these out and take them to the job site when building closets in new construction homes.

  • Standard Bedroom Closet Heights — Rod heights, shelf heights, and top shelf dimensions for standard bedroom closets. The most-used reference on closet jobs.
  • Standard Split Reach-In Closet Layout — Double-hang rod heights and shelf placement for standard split reach-in bedroom closets.
  • Split Reach-In Closet with Shelf Stack — Reach-in layout combining double-hang sections with an integrated shelf stack for folded storage.
  • Tapered Pantry Divider Layout — Dimensions and installation details for tapered pantry dividers in residential closet and pantry builds.
  • Counting Closets — Job Planning Reference — How to inventory and categorize closets from floor plans before you start shelving. Essential for estimating material and labor on new houses.
  • Cleat on Middle Bulkhead — Detail Drawing — Shelf cleat attachment detail for middle bulkheads (vertical dividers) in closet shelving systems.
  • Cleat on End Bulkhead — Detail Drawing — Shelf cleat attachment detail at end bulkheads where closet sections meet the wall.

Trim Carpentry References #

Standard dimensions and detail drawings for interior trim work — baseboard transitions, shoe molding details, and trim standards that every finish carpenter should have on hand. These references follow the conventions used by most production builders and are consistent with standards published by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

  • Basic Trim Standards — Quick Reference — Standard reveal dimensions, casing sizes, and baseboard specifications for interior trim in new residential construction.
  • Baseboard on Nosing — Detail Drawing — How baseboard terminates at a stair nosing. Cut angles, transition details, and installation sequence.
  • Shoe Molding on Skirt Board — Detail Drawing — Shoe molding placement and angle cuts where it meets a stair skirt board.
  • Garage Landing Standard Dimensions — Step heights, tread depths, and landing platform measurements for residential garage entries.

Job Site Checklists #

Step-by-step checklists for managing finish carpentry jobs from setup to cleanup. Print these and check items off as you go — they help you catch details before they become callbacks. Whether you are running your first house or training a new crew member, these checklists keep the job organized.

  • Setting Up the Job — Checklist — Material delivery, staging, tool setup, workspace preparation, and initial measurements before starting trim work.
  • Finishing the Job and Cleaning Up — Checklist — Final inspection, touch-up tasks, cleaning procedures, and punch list verification before leaving the job site.
  • Interior Door Installation — Checklist — Step-by-step verification for hanging interior doors. Shimming, plumbing, hinge placement, strike plate, and hardware.

How to Use These Finish Carpentry Cheat Sheets #

These references are meant to be used on the job, not just read on a screen. Here is how we recommend getting the most out of them:

  • Download and print. Click any link above to open the PDF, then print it. These are designed to be legible on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
  • Keep them in your truck. Store printed copies in a binder or clipboard in your work vehicle so they are always available on the job site.
  • Use them as training aids. Hand these to new crew members as quick references while they learn standard dimensions and procedures. They save time on explanations and reduce mistakes.
  • Bookmark this page. We add new finish carpentry cheat sheets as we publish new guides. Check back regularly for updates.

Why We Made These Cheat Sheets #

When we started training new carpenters, we noticed the same questions coming up on every job: What height does the double-hang rod go? How do you terminate baseboard at a stair nosing? What is the standard garage landing dimension? Instead of answering them over and over, we wrote the answers down in one-page printable references.

These finish carpentry cheat sheets started as internal documents for our own crews. After seeing how much time they saved on the job site, we decided to share them here so other carpenters and apprentices can benefit too. Every dimension and detail is based on real production work in the Dallas–Fort Worth new construction market.
