Introduction #

This guide assumes you already know those three guides well. It only covers what changes once the surround gets big enough to call grand-scale: multi-day work, multiple zones, and full professional scaffolding.
A shiplap fireplace over 15 feet is not just a bigger version of a small one. It is a different kind of job. Quote it as its own multi-day project with its own schedule, not as an add-on to a punch list. Make sure the customer knows the job gets planned and staged before the first board goes up. Confirm scaffolding access and material staging with the homeowner before you set a start date. A job this size is much harder to reschedule mid-build than a small one.

What Changes at Extreme Scale #
- Full scaffolding system required. You need multi-level scaffolding with safety rails and plank decks (the flat platforms you stand and work on), sized to cover the full width and height of the surround. Rolling platforms are not enough. Use proper frame scaffolding that locks in place. This is the single biggest change at this scale.
- Multi-day project. At 15’+ wide and potentially 12-20′ tall, you are looking at 30+ courses (each course is one full row of boards running around the surround) and 60-80+ miter cuts (angled cuts that let two boards meet cleanly at a corner). Plan for 2-3 full days minimum. Stop work at clean break points, like at the mantel or at a scaffolding height change.
- Three or more butt joints per course on the front face. A butt joint is where two boards meet end to end in a straight line, instead of overlapping. A 16-foot front face with 8-foot boards has two of these joints per course. A 20-foot face has three. Add in the mitered corners, and each course needs 5-6 precision cuts minimum.
- Material logistics. A 15’+ surround can take 300-500 linear feet of shiplap. Order all of it from a single lot (one production batch) so the color and grain match. Stage the boards near the scaffolding, sorted by length, so the work goes smoothly.
- Viewing distance affects quality standards. People view the upper part of a 15-foot tall shiplap fireplace from 10-15 feet away. A small flaw that is invisible up close turns into a visible pattern when it repeats over 30+ courses. Being consistent matters more than making any single joint perfect.
Additional Tools for Grand-Scale Wraps #

- Frame scaffolding system - multi-tier, with guardrails, toe boards (low guard boards along the platform edge that stop tools from sliding off), and plank decks. It must support two workers plus materials at height.
- Second miter saw setup at scaffolding level - hauling boards down for each cut, then back up, wastes too much time. Set up a cutting station on the scaffold deck, or at scaffold height nearby.
- Laser level (mandatory at this scale) - a hand level cannot reliably check courses across 15+ feet, especially up high. You need a self-leveling laser that projects a line across all three faces.

Multi-Zone Planning at Grand Scale #
The 10-15 foot supplement covers two-zone planning: below the mantel and above it. At 15’+ scale, split the job into three or more zones instead:
Zone 1: Floor to Mantel #
This works the same as the 10-15 foot guide. Finish all courses from the floor to mantel height before you move the scaffolding for the upper work. This zone sits at eye level, so it is the most visible. Give it your most careful miter work.
Zone 2: Mantel to Scaffolding Transition #
This zone runs from just above the mantel to about 10 feet up, the area you can reach from the first scaffolding tier. Check that it lines up with Zone 1 at both mitered corners before you continue. This transition is the most common place for problems: boards above the mantel can drift out of line with the boards below.
Zone 3: Upper Section #
This is everything above the first scaffolding tier. Raise the scaffolding, re-level it, and keep going. Check that the laser level’s reference line from Zone 1 still reads correctly at this height. Building settlement and scaffolding weight can shift the structure slightly. On a grand surround, a 1/8″ drift in each zone adds up. By the top, that can become a 3/8″+ drift, which is visible from the viewing distance.
Pro Tip: At the end of each day’s work, step back to the room’s main viewing angle, usually the opposite wall or the main seating area, and look at the whole surround. Problems that are invisible up close on the scaffolding show up clearly from across the room. Catch and fix them before you start the next zone.

All Steps - Consistency Over Perfection #
With 60-80+ mitered corners and maybe 20+ butt joints, a few small flaws are unavoidable. The key is consistent imperfection. If every miter has the same tiny gap, the eye reads it as part of the design. But if 29 miters are perfect and the 30th has a visible gap, that one joint stands out. Use the same technique, the same pressure, and the same amount of adhesive on every joint.
Step 4 (Work Around Firebox) - Same as Core Guide #
Heat clearance rules do not change with surround size. Keep the manufacturer’s required distance from the firebox, no matter how large the surround is.
Steps 5-7 (Upper Installation) - Scaffold-Based Workflow #
Reorganize your workflow to work efficiently on scaffolding:
- Batch-measure and batch-cut. Measure enough boards for 4-5 courses at once, cut them all, then install them in order. This cuts down on trips up and down the scaffolding.
- Apply adhesive on the scaffold deck, right before you lift each board into position. Do not apply it at ground level. It will start to set while you climb and position the board.
- Check level with the laser at every zone transition and every 5 courses within a zone.
Quality Check - Grand-Scale Additions #
Finish the checklists from both the fireplace core guide and the 10-15 foot supplement. Then check the following:
- Sight the entire surround from the room’s primary viewing angle (opposite wall or main seating area) - no visible drift, waves, or pattern irregularities
- Zone transitions are seamless - courses above and below each scaffolding break align perfectly at corners
- Miter quality is consistent from first to last cut - no drop-off at the upper courses where fatigue sets in
- All scaffolding contact points cleaned up (scuffs, marks, dents in boards)
- Material color/grain consistency across the full surround - no banding from different board lots
Troubleshooting - Grand-Scale Fireplace Issues #
Cumulative level drift across zones #
Drift can add up at each zone transition. If Zone 3 boards end up 1/4″ out of level compared to Zone 1, do not fix it all at once. Spread the correction across 3-4 courses within Zone 3 by making small adjustments to the reveal. If you try to correct it in a single course, the sudden change in that gap will be obvious at this scale.
Miter quality degrading in upper zones #
Fatigue and awkward scaffolding positions lead to less precise cuts and assembly. Fix it by taking frequent breaks, checking the saw angle before each batch of cuts, and letting the fresher team member handle the miter assembly while the other holds boards in position. Work at height is physically demanding, and quality drops when an installer gets tired.
Board color variation from multiple bundles #
When a job needs 300+ linear feet of material, you may not be able to get it all from one lot. Fix this by mixing boards from different bundles into each course, instead of using one bundle per course. If the boards get pre-finished with stain or paint, apply the finish to all of them before you start, using the same stain batch. For natural or clear-coat installs, sort the boards by grain pattern and spread them out evenly.

A job this size only gets built right once. Do not sign off until that final look-back is clean.
