Introduction #
You are doing a rail fitting any time the rail does not run straight into the post the normal way. That is the trigger: the rail has to change orientation, and getting it there is tricky work. It is also an extra charge, so make sure it gets reported rather than absorbed into the rail run. Most of the time the direction change is made with a factory-shaped piece rather than by bending or notching straight stock. Common fittings include a volute or turnout that starts a rail run at the bottom newel, and a gooseneck, a rise piece that carries the rail from the angled rake section up to a level run at a landing. Fittings connect to straight rail sections with a rail bolt, a hidden hanger-style bolt threaded into both pieces and drawn tight with a nut through an access hole underneath.
This guide covers installing one fitting into a rail run using a rail bolt connection. It assumes the straight rail sections on either side of the fitting are already cut to length, the way they are built for post-to-post runs in How to Build a Handrail for Metal Balusters Like a Pro. Fittings show up most often on curved or open staircases, at direction changes, and anywhere a rail needs to rise from the stair angle to a flat landing run.
Rail bolt joints are hidden by design, once the fitting is drawn tight and the access hole is plugged, nobody sees the hardware. That also means there is no room for a sloppy fit, the joint has to be right before you tighten anything down.
Before You Begin #
Prerequisites #
- The straight rail sections on both sides of this fitting are already cut and, where they land on a newel post, that post is set, plumb, and secured.
- The fitting itself is on site and matches the profile, species, and finish of the straight rail stock.
- You have dry-fit the fitting against both adjoining rail sections and confirmed the profiles meet flush with no step or gap.
What You Need To Know #
- Rail bolt hardware has a wood-screw thread on one end and a machine-bolt thread on the other. The wood-screw end goes into the fitting, the machine-bolt end goes into the straight rail section, and a star nut inside the rail draws the two pieces together.
- The access hole for the star nut gets a real wood plug once the joint is tight, glued in and trimmed flush, the same technique used to hide lag screw holes on the back of a newel post. That is not a cosmetic fill, it is a structural plug we install ourselves.
- Glue the mating faces of every fitting joint, even though the rail bolt is doing the structural work. The glue is what keeps the profiles from telegraphing a hairline gap over time.
- Dry-fit before you commit. A fitting that is drilled and bolted in the wrong position is very hard to walk back.

Install a Handrail Fitting: Step-by-Step #
Step 1: Dry-Fit the Fitting #
Hold the fitting against the straight rail section it connects to, without any hardware yet. Check that the profiles line up with no visible step at the joint. Mark centerlines on both pieces so you can find the same reference point again once you start drilling.
Step 2: Drill for the Rail Bolt #
Following the rail bolt manufacturer's spec, drill the pilot hole into the fitting for the wood-screw end, and the corresponding hole into the straight rail section for the machine-bolt end. Drill the access hole on the underside of the rail section, sized to reach the star nut once the bolt is threaded through.
Step 3: Install the Rail Bolt and Draw the Joint Tight #
- Thread the wood-screw end of the rail bolt into the fitting.
- Apply glue to both mating faces, then bring the two pieces together, feeding the bolt's machine-thread end into the rail section hole.
- Reach through the access hole with the star nut and thread it onto the bolt.
- Draw it tight with the wrench or nut driver, checking that the joint closes fully and the profiles stay aligned as it tightens.
- Wipe glue squeeze-out immediately.
Step 4: Plug the Access Hole #
Once the joint is tight and the glue has had a few minutes to grab, glue a wood plug into the access hole. Let it set, then trim it flush with a flush-cut saw or a sharp chisel. This plug is structural cover, not a cosmetic fill, so take the time to get it flush and matched to the surrounding wood.
Close-Out #
Check the joint under good light from a couple of angles, the profile should read as one continuous piece with no visible step or gap. Sand the plugged access hole flush to the surrounding surface if it needs it, that is a wood-to-wood repair we finish ourselves, not a nail hole for the painter. Sweep up any shavings and set aside any offcuts.
Quality Check #
- The fitting's profile lines up flush with the adjoining rail section, no step or visible gap
- The rail bolt is fully drawn tight, the joint does not move when the rail is gripped and flexed near it
- The access hole plug is glued, trimmed flush, and sanded smooth
- No glue residue visible on the finished surface
- Fitting species, profile, and finish match the rest of the run
Troubleshooting #
Problem: The profiles do not line up flush even though the dry fit looked fine.
Solution: The rail bolt likely pulled the joint slightly off-center as it tightened. Back the star nut off, realign the pieces by hand, and re-tighten slowly, checking alignment as you go rather than cranking it down in one motion.
Problem: The star nut will not reach or thread onto the bolt through the access hole.
Solution: Check the access hole depth and angle against the bolt length before you force it. A hole that is too shallow or drilled at a slight angle will not let the nut seat. Redrill true to the bolt's actual path rather than fighting the existing hole.
Problem: The wood plug does not match the surrounding grain or color once trimmed.
Solution: Cut plugs from an offcut of the same rail stock whenever you can, not from generic dowel stock. If the mismatch is already installed and it is a stain-grade rail, flag it for the finisher rather than sanding it aggressively trying to blend it, that risks gouging a profile someone is going to grip.
