How to Install a Mitered Stair Riser

Stairs/Handrails Skill Level: Advanced (Level 3) · Estimated Time: 45-75 minutes per riser

Introduction #

A finished riser is the trim board that covers the vertical face of a stair step, the board between one tread and the next. On an open staircase, one where a run of stairs has an exposed side instead of a wall on both sides, the riser's outer end does not die into a wall. It meets the skirt board that runs down the open stringer, and that meeting is a mitered corner: the riser end is cut at an angle and the skirt board carries the matching angle, so the two parts close on each other with no end grain showing. This is one joint between two different parts, the riser and the skirt board, not a piece glued back onto itself. Check the stair finish before you start. Finished risers are our work on a hard-surface staircase, LVP or wood treads, where the riser is going to be painted or stained to match what the customer picked. A carpeted staircase does not get one, so if the stairs are going to be carpeted this task is not yours.

This guide covers installing a single finished riser on the open side of a staircase, where it meets the skirt board in a mitered corner. If the staircase has walls on both sides, meaning there is no open side to finish, the flat version of this task is what you want instead. That one is titled How to Install a Straight Stair Riser, because the service catalog calls it Finished Riser - Straight, but it is the same job you would call flat: the risers land flat into the skirt boards on both sides.

This riser meets the skirt board at a mitered corner, so the two parts have to agree on one angle. The skirt board goes in first, always. That means the angle you need is already sitting on the wall when you start: take it off the installed skirt rather than guessing at it. Because the riser goes in ahead of the treads, it will sit exposed on an active staircase until the treads cover the horizontal, so protect it once it is set. What that means for your cut: it decides whether you are cutting the riser's miter to match a skirt board that is already in place, or cutting it to an angle you will confirm against the skirt board once that board goes in.

Before You Begin #

Prerequisites #

  • The stairs are getting a hard-surface finish, LVP or wood treads, not carpet. Carpeted stairs do not get a finished riser.
  • Stair treads are installed and the rough stringer/riser framing is solid underneath where this finished riser attaches.
  • Drywall on the open side, if any exists near the stair opening, is complete.
  • The skirt board on the open side is installed. Skirts always go in before risers, so if it is not there yet, this riser is not ready to cut.
  • You know which end of this riser is the open end that meets the skirt board in a mitered corner, and which end, if any, meets a wall or a closed stringer instead.

What You Need To Know #

  • Glue every miter, no exceptions, and do not cross-nail it. A liberal bead of glue and a tight, pinned joint holds the corner without fighting the material.
  • The miter is not automatically 45 degrees. A stair skirt board follows the rake of the stairs, so the angle where it meets the riser depends on that rake. Take the angle from the actual skirt board in the field, do not assume a number.
  • Rise and run should be consistent step to step. Measure a few steps before you cut, the same way you would for skirt boards, and use the average if the variation is small.
  • This is a wood-to-wood joint at the miter, which means we glue, putty, and sand it ourselves so it reads as one clean corner. That is different from a nail hole, which stays painter scope.
  • Match the riser material to what the customer's spec calls for, typically the same species or paint-grade material as the treads and nosing on the job.

Tools Required #

Power Tools #

  • miter saw
  • Circular saw or jigsaw, for a width rip or fitting the riser to an uneven opening
  • Orbital sander
  • Air compressor
  • 15-gauge finish nailer
  • 18-gauge brad nailer

Hand Tools #

  • tape measure
  • Framing square
  • Sliding bevel gauge (T-bevel), for transferring the skirt board's angle to the miter saw
  • Torpedo level
  • Pencil
  • Clamps

Supplies #

  • Wood glue
  • Wood putty, for the wood-to-wood miter joint only
  • 120-grit sandpaper

Materials #

  • Finished riser stock, sized to the step width and riser height, matched to the job tread and nosing material

Install a Mitered Stair Riser: Step-by-Step #

Step 1: Measure the Riser Opening #

Measure the width of the riser opening at both the top and the bottom of the space. Framing is rarely perfectly square, so check both. Measure the riser height too, the vertical distance the board needs to cover.

Note which end meets the skirt board. That is the open end, the one facing out into the stairwell rather than into a wall or a closed stringer that skirt board covers on both sides. That end is the one that gets the miter.

Step 2: Cut the Riser to Width and Height #

Cut the riser to height on the miter saw first, a straight square cut. Cut it to width, leaving the open end long by an inch or so until you have confirmed the miter angle against the skirt board and the fit is right, then trim to final length once you are sure.

Step 3: Cut and Fit the Miter to the Skirt Board #

  • Find the skirt board's actual angle with a sliding bevel gauge, set against the installed skirt directly. It is already there, because skirts go in before risers. Take the angle from the stringer's rake instead and plan to confirm it against the skirt board once that board is cut.
  • Transfer the bevel gauge's angle to the miter saw and cut the riser's open end. Do not assume a 45-degree cut, the skirt follows the stair rake and the angle changes with it.
  • Dry-fit the riser's mitered end against the skirt board before gluing anything. The two parts should close tight with no visible gap. If they do not, re-cut rather than force it, a forced miter opens back up later.

Step 4: Glue the Mitered Joint #

Apply a liberal bead of glue to both mating miter faces, the riser's cut end and the skirt board's matching miter, and press them together. Clamp briefly if the joint wants to spring open. Pin the joint with the 18-gauge brad nailer, a few brads is enough, do not cross-nail it, the glue is what holds a proper miter, not the fasteners.

Wipe any glue squeeze-out right away with a damp rag.

Step 5: Install the Riser #

Set the riser into the opening, checking that it sits square and covers the framing cleanly. Nail it off with the 15-gauge finish nailer into solid framing behind it, working from one end to the other. Use the 18-gauge brad nailer near the mitered edge that meets the skirt board, where the heavier nail risks splitting thinner material.

Close-Out #

Once the riser is nailed off, check the miter joint one more time under good light. If it is tight, putty and sand that joint now, it is a wood-to-wood joint and that finishing is our work, not the painter's. Set any proud nails below the surface with a nail set. Sweep up the cutoffs and dust before moving to the next riser.

Quality Check #

  • Riser sits square in the opening, covering the framing with no gaps at the edges
  • Mitered joint where the riser meets the skirt board is tight with no visible gap, glued and pinned, not cross-nailed
  • The miter joint is puttied and sanded smooth to the touch
  • All nails are set below the surface, nothing proud
  • Riser height and rise are consistent with the rest of the run

Troubleshooting #

Problem: The mitered joint between the riser and the skirt board has a visible gap even after gluing and pinning.

Solution: Re-cut it. A gap that gets puttied to look closed on a wood-to-wood joint will often telegraph again once the wood moves with the seasons. Check the angle against the skirt board again with your bevel gauge before cutting the replacement, do not just assume the saw's factory 45-degree stop is right for this stair's rake.

Problem: The riser does not sit flush against the framing, it rocks or bows.

Solution: The framing behind it is not flat, common where a stringer has a slight crown or dip. Shim behind the riser at the low spots before nailing, and nail through the shim so the riser reads flat from the front.

Problem: Rise height comes out different from the rest of the stairs on this one step.

Solution: Re-measure the actual rise at this step rather than assuming it matches your average from Step 1. A single step that is genuinely out of tolerance needs its own custom riser height, forcing a standard cut onto an odd step just moves the problem to the next tread.

Problem: The skirt board is not installed yet, so there is nothing to take the miter angle from.

Solution: Confirm the install sequence with your lead before you cut. If the skirt board goes in after this riser, take the angle from the stringer's actual rake with your bevel gauge, cut the riser long at that end, and hold off on final gluing and nailing there until the skirt board is in and you can confirm the fit against it.
