Introduction #
A finished riser is the trim board that covers the vertical face of a stair step. Flat is when there are walls on both sides of the staircase: the riser does not need a miter, it just needs a clean, square cut that goes flat into the skirt boards on both ends. That square cut is what makes this the straight version of the task. Check the stair finish before you start. Finished risers are our work on a hard-surface staircase, LVP or wood treads, where the riser is going to be painted or stained to match what the customer picked. A carpeted staircase does not get one, so if the stairs are going to be carpeted this task is not yours.

Straight risers are usually faster than mitered ones, there is no return to cut, fit, and glue, but the same rules about square cuts and consistent rise apply. A sloppy square cut looks just as bad as a bad miter once the skirt goes in around it.
Before You Begin #
Prerequisites #
- The stairs are getting a hard-surface finish, LVP or wood treads, not carpet. Carpeted stairs do not get a finished riser.
- Stair treads are installed and the rough framing underneath this riser location is solid.
- Drywall on both sides of the stair opening is complete, since both ends of a straight riser go flat into the skirt boards on both sides.
- The skirt boards on both sides are already installed. Skirts always go in before risers, so if they are not in yet, this riser is not ready to cut.
- You have confirmed both ends of this riser are enclosed, not open. If one end is open, use the mitered version instead.
What You Need To Know #
- Measure rise and run at a few steps before cutting, the same as any other stair trim task, and use the average if the variation between steps is small.
- Both ends of a straight riser are square cuts that go flat into the skirt boards, no miter to cut. The riser goes in ahead of the treads, so it sits exposed on an active staircase until the treads cover the horizontal. Protect it once it is set.
- Match the riser material to the job's tread and nosing material, per the customer's spec.
- This is still trim that gets nailed into real framing behind it, not a cosmetic overlay. Check that the framing is solid before you commit to a fastening pattern.

Install a Straight Stair Riser: Step-by-Step #
Step 1: Measure the Riser Opening #
Measure the width of the opening at the top and bottom, and the riser height. Check that both ends are genuinely enclosed, walls on both sides where the riser will go flat into the skirt boards, before you commit to a straight cut instead of a mitered one.
Step 2: Cut the Riser Square #
Cut the riser to height on the miter saw with a clean square cut. Cut it to width the same way, square on both ends. There is no miter to cut here, so once the height and width are right, the cutting is done.
Step 3: Dry-Fit and Check the Fit #
Set the riser into the opening without nailing it. Check that it sits square, with consistent contact along both edges and no gap wider than the painter's normal tolerance to close. If one end does not sit tight, trim that end rather than forcing the piece in, a forced riser will bow.
Step 4: Install the Riser #
Nail the riser off with the 15-gauge finish nailer into solid framing behind it, working from one end toward the other so the board does not shift as you go. Keep nails away from the very edges of the board where the material is more likely to split.
Close-Out #
Set any proud nails below the surface with a nail set. Check the fit one more time at both ends and along the face for any bow. Sweep up cutoffs and dust before moving to the next riser.
Quality Check #
- Both ends of the riser are square and sit tight against the framing or wall
- Riser height and rise are consistent with the rest of the run
- No gap wider than the painter's normal tolerance at either edge
- All nails are set below the surface, nothing proud
- Riser face is flat, no bow or rock when pressed
Troubleshooting #
Problem: The riser does not sit flush, it rocks or bows in the middle.
Solution: The framing behind it is not flat. Shim behind the riser at the low spots before nailing, and nail through the shim so the face reads flat.
Problem: There is a gap wider than expected at one end.
Solution: Re-measure that end specifically rather than trusting the average width you used for the cut. Framing openings are rarely perfectly consistent top to bottom, trim the riser to match the actual opening at that end instead of splitting the difference.
Problem: Rise height does not match the rest of the stairs on this one step.
Solution: Re-check the actual rise at this specific step. A step that is genuinely out of tolerance needs a riser cut to its own real measurement, not the run's average, or the mismatch just moves down to the next tread.
