How to Install a Pocket Door Frame

Doors & Openings Skill Level: Intermediate (Level 2) · Estimated Time: 1-2 Hours

Introduction #

A pocket door frame is the steel track and split-stud cavity built into the wall during framing, before drywall goes up. The split-stud cavity is the pocket built into the wall that the door slides into, framed by two thin stud walls set apart from each other. This frame is the skeleton the whole pocket door depends on. The header track is what the door slab will hang from, and the framed cavity is what it slides into. Everything a finish carpenter does later depends on this frame being right: hanging the slab, adjusting the rollers, and installing the split jambs and casing. The frame has to be square, plumb (perfectly vertical, with no lean), and dead level (perfectly horizontal, with no tilt from one end to the other). Get it right here and the finish work goes smoothly. Get it wrong and it comes back on whoever hangs the door, usually after the wall is closed up with no easy way back in.

Installing the pocket door frame is normally the framing crew’s job, not ours. We install pocket door frames at framing stage only by special request. We get called in because, on those jobs, the framers have gotten it wrong often enough that the trip is worth it. We are also the crew that comes back later to hang the door in whatever frame is sitting in that wall. A frame we set true the first time means a lot less rework for us down the road. A frame we have to fight after drywall means the opposite.

The single most important thing on this job is a dead level track. A pocket door that lives on an out-of-level header will creep open or creep shut on its own. No matter how well the door itself gets adjusted later, that will not fix it. The door is just responding to gravity. Straight split studs, a plumb strike-side stud, and a protected cavity all matter too. But if you get nothing else right, get the track level.

This guide covers the frame only: confirming the rough opening, setting the track, and framing the split-stud cavity, all done before drywall. The door slab, roller hardware, split jambs, and casing come later, after drywall is up - that is the finish-stage work covered in “How to Install a Pocket Door.” Our job here is to leave a true, level, protected frame for that guide to start from.

Before You Begin #

Prerequisites #

  • Rough opening is framed (header, jack studs, meaning the vertical studs that support the header, and sill) before you start - this guide does not cover cutting in the rough opening itself
  • Pocket door frame kit is on site and complete - track, split studs, strike-side stud, spacers, brackets, and fasteners all present. Check the box against the kit’s parts list before you start, not after you’re missing a bracket
  • Wall framing on both sides of the rough opening is plumb and square, and the subfloor at the opening is level
  • No electrical, plumbing, or HVAC is run through the pocket cavity - that path has to stay clear for the life of the door
  • Drywall has not gone up yet - this is framing-stage work, done before rock

What You Need To Know #

  • Most split-stud kits (Johnson-style and similar) size the rough opening around a simple rule of thumb. Width runs to roughly twice the door’s nominal width, plus the kit’s jamb allowance. Height runs to the door height, plus clearance for the header and track. Treat that rule of thumb as a gut-check only, not the real number. The kit’s printed rough opening spec sheet is the actual number to build to. It varies by manufacturer and by single versus double door. If the rough opening in front of you does not match the spec sheet that shipped with the kit, get that corrected before you set anything
  • Split studs are not the same thing as split jambs. Split studs are the rough framing members you are setting now, at framing stage, to form the pocket cavity. Split jambs are the finish trim pieces installed later, after drywall, in “How to Install a Pocket Door.” Keep the two straight in your head and on the jobsite
  • The track has to read level, not just close. A track that is out even a small amount over its length will show up later as a door that drifts open or shut on its own
  • Most kits ship with spacer blocks that hold the split studs at the correct gap for the door thickness. Leave these in place when you leave the job. They protect the cavity through drywall and rough-in (the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work that happens between framing and drywall). The finish carpenter deals with the spacer blocks later, when the door slab goes in
  • Pull straight stock for the split studs. A bowed stud fights you the whole way through leveling and reads as a hump under drywall later, or as a bind once the door is hung
  • Drywall screws that are too long are a real threat to a pocket frame. A screw that punches through the far side of a split stud sits directly in the door’s travel path. Months after you’ve left the job, that screw tip will scratch or catch the slab every time it opens and closes. Flag the pocket bay for the drywall crew before they hang rock, the crew’s word for hanging drywall

Tools Required #

  • Screws or framing nails, per your kit’s assembly instructions (metal-stud kits include the correct screws)
  • Self-tapping screws (kit-supplied, for mounting the track to the header)
  • Cedar shims
  • Rosin paper or cardboard (temporary cavity protection)

Materials #

  • Pocket door frame kit sized to the door - track, split studs, strike-side stud, spacers, and mounting hardware
  • Straight SPF (spruce-pine-fir) framing lumber, in case any jack stud or header material needs correcting before the kit goes in

Steps to Install a Pocket Door Frame #

Step 1: Confirm the Rough Opening Matches the Kit Spec #

Before you touch the kit, measure the rough opening: width, height, and diagonal corner to corner to check it’s square. Compare those numbers against the kit’s printed rough opening spec sheet, not against a memorized rule of thumb. Kits vary by manufacturer and by single versus double door. The spec sheet is the number that was actually engineered for the hardware in the box. Check the header for level and the jack studs for plumb while you’re at it. If anything is off, get it corrected now, before any frame components go in.

Open the kit and lay out every piece against the parts list: track, split-stud rails, strike-side stud, spacer blocks, and the bag of fasteners and brackets. It is a lot easier to call the supplier now than to discover a missing bracket halfway through the install.

Pro Tip: Look everywhere before you say something is missing. Kit hardware bags get taped inside the track or zip-tied to a stud rail more often than you’d think.

Step 2: Dry-Fit and Trim the Kit Components #

Set the track and split-stud rails into the opening without fastening anything yet. Most kits ship long and need to be trimmed to the exact rough opening height with a circular saw. Cut the split-stud rails to length first. Then dry-fit the whole assembly, meaning track, both split studs, and the strike-side stud, to confirm everything sits where it should before you commit a single fastener.

Check the dry fit against the rough opening one more time. This is your last easy chance to catch a sizing problem - once the track is fastened to the header, corrections get a lot more painful.

Step 3: Set and Level the Track #

This is the step the whole job hangs on. Position the track against the header per the kit instructions and fasten one end loosely with a single screw so you can still adjust it. Set your 6-foot level on the track and check it across its full length. Shim as needed (add thin wedges behind the track to nudge it into place) until it reads dead level, not just close.

Fasten the rest of the track to the header using the kit-supplied screws, checking level again after every fastener. Driving a screw can pull the track slightly out of level, and you want to catch that immediately, not after the whole thing is nailed down. Work down the length of the track a fastener at a time rather than driving them all and checking once at the end.

Pro Tip: A pocket door that creeps open or creeps shut on its own almost always traces back to this step. There is no adjustment on the finished door that fully corrects for an out-of-level track - fix it here, not later.

Step 4: Hang and Fasten the Pocket-Side Split Studs #

With the track level and secure, hang the pocket-side split studs from it per the kit instructions and set their base against the floor plate. Check each stud for plumb with your torpedo level (a short level for tight spots where a 6-foot level won’t fit). Then fasten through the studs into the floor plate and into the header or blocking above. Follow the instructions that came with your frame kit: most kits fasten with screws, and metal-stud kits include the correct screws for the job. On some wood split-stud kits, a framing nail (a thick nail made for structural framing, not the thin finish nail used for trim) will also hold. Space fasteners every 8″ to 12″ along the framing.

Leave the kit’s spacer blocks in place between the two split-stud rails as you go. They hold the rails at the correct gap for the door thickness through the rest of framing, rough-in, and drywall. Do not pull them out to make fastening easier.

Step 5: Plumb and Fasten the Strike-Side Stud #

The strike-side stud is where the door will come to rest when closed, and it is what the split jambs and casing will reference later. Set it into the opening. Shim it plumb in both directions with cedar shims, and check it with your 6-foot level before driving a single fastener. It is much easier to hold plumb while shimming than to chase it after nailing.

Once it reads plumb top to bottom and front to back, fasten it to the jack stud through the shims with the screws or framing nails called for in your kit’s instructions, 8″ to 12″ on center. Recheck plumb after fastening. Driving fasteners through shims can shift things slightly, and you want to catch that now.

Step 6: True Up the Split Studs Down Their Length #

Sight down the face of each split stud, or pull a string line top to bottom, to check for bow (a curve or belly along its length instead of a straight line). A stud that is plumb at the top and bottom but bowed in the middle will still cause problems. It reads as a hump under drywall, and it can pinch the door slab once it’s hung, even though your level checks came back clean at the ends.

Correct any bow you find with additional blocking or fasteners before you move on. This is also your last chance to catch a stud that should have been swapped for straighter stock back in Step 2.

Step 7: Protect the Cavity and Hand Off #

Cover the open track and pocket cavity with rosin paper or cardboard before you leave the area, and sweep up any debris and offcuts. Do not leave scrap or sawdust sitting in the cavity, where it can jam the door once it’s hung.

Flag the pocket bay for the drywall crew before they hang rock: the wall over the pocket cavity should go up with nails or adhesive, not screws. If screws have to be used there, they need to be short enough, 1″ or less. That way the tip cannot reach through the far side of the split stud and into the door’s travel path.

That closes out our scope at framing stage. The door slab, roller hardware, split jambs, and casing all happen later, after drywall, and that is a separate trip covered in “How to Install a Pocket Door.” Leave the frame true, level, and protected, and that job starts clean.

Quality Check #

  • Track reads dead level across its full length, confirmed at multiple points
  • Rough opening matches the kit’s spec sheet, width and height both
  • Split studs are straight and true along their full length, no bow
  • Strike-side stud is plumb in both directions
  • All fasteners are set flush - nothing proud that will catch drywall or a door slab later
  • Kit spacer blocks are still in place, holding the split studs at the correct gap
  • Pocket cavity is clear of debris and covered before drywall
  • Drywall crew has been flagged on the pocket bay - nails or adhesive, or screws no longer than 1″

Troubleshooting After You Install a Pocket Door Frame #

Track Reads Out of Level After You Fasten It #

This usually happens when a fastener pulls the track tight against a high spot in the header before you’ve checked that section, or when a shim shifted while you were driving screws. Back out the fasteners nearest the problem area, reset the shims, and recheck with your 6-foot level. Refasten one screw at a time, checking level after each one instead of driving them all at once.

Split Studs Are Bowed or Racked #

Bow usually comes from stock that wasn’t straight to begin with, or from fastening one end without checking the middle of the run. A racked stud is different from a bowed one: racked means the stud has twisted out of square along its length, not just curved. Sight down the stud or pull a string line to find the high spot, then correct it with additional blocking or fasteners. If the stock itself is bad, swap it for straighter material rather than trying to force it true. It will keep fighting you otherwise.

Rough Opening Doesn’t Match the Kit Spec #

Do not force a kit into an opening that doesn’t match its spec sheet. Go back to the framing and correct it before setting any frame components. Trying to make up the difference with extra shimming, or leaving an undersized cavity, just moves the problem downstream to whoever hangs the door.

Strike-Side Stud Won’t Hold Plumb #

If the stud reads plumb before fastening but shifts once you drive nails, the shims likely aren’t fully seated or are compressing unevenly under the fastener. Back the fastener out, reseat the shims so they bear evenly across the stud, and refasten while checking plumb after each nail rather than after the whole run.

Drywall Crew Already Ran Long Screws Into the Pocket #

Before the rock is finished out, run your hand along both sides of the pocket cavity through the open stud bay. Feel for screw tips poking through the far side. Back out any offenders and replace them with nails or screws no longer than 1″. Catching this before the wall is finished is far cheaper than catching it after the door is hung and scratching on every pass.
