Introduction #

Installing privacy pocket door hardware is a crucial task in both new construction and remodel projects, providing functional and aesthetic enhancements to interior spaces. Johnson Hardware makes most of the pocket door hardware we see, and their fitting instructions are worth a look for the specific latch on your job. Pocket doors are an excellent solution for areas where space is limited, and privacy hardware adds an essential layer of utility. In a production environment, the key is to streamline the process to ensure speed and consistency while minimizing callbacks.

The single most important concept in achieving professional results with pocket door hardware is precision in alignment and installation. Misalignment can lead to operational issues and customer dissatisfaction, so focus on ensuring all components are properly fitted and adjusted.

Before You Begin #

Before you install privacy pocket door hardware, confirm that the following prerequisites are complete.

Prerequisites #

  • Drywall and painting must be complete.
  • Flooring should be installed to avoid damage during hardware installation.
  • Ensure the pocket door is already hung and operational.

What You Need To Know #

When you install privacy pocket door hardware, understanding these core techniques will save you time and prevent callbacks.

  • Ensure the door is plumb and level before starting hardware installation.
  • Check that the door slides smoothly without obstruction.
  • Confirm the availability of all hardware components, including strike plates and latches.

Tools #

  • Drill - For installing the latch and strike plate.
  • Chisel - To mortise the strike plate area if necessary.
  • Level - To ensure the door is plumb.
  • Screwdriver - For securing hardware components.
  • Hole saw - If adjustments to pre-drilled holes are needed.

Materials #

  • Privacy pocket door latch - Ensure it includes all necessary components.
  • Strike plate - Specific to the latch model.
  • Wood screws - Appropriate size for the latch and strike plate.
  • Plastic wedges - For better installation stability.

Installation Steps #

Step 1. Prepare the Door #

Ensure the pocket door is properly hung and slides smoothly. Check for any obstructions or misalignment that could affect the hardware installation.

  • Adjust the door as necessary to ensure it is plumb and level.

Step 2. Mark Latch Location #

Most pocket door slabs arrive pre-cut for the latch, so check that first. If yours is not pre-cut, measure from the top of another door slab in the house to the center of its lockset, then match that same height here so every knob in the house lines up.

  • Use a template if provided with the hardware kit.

Step 3. Drill Latch Hole #

Using a drill, create the necessary hole for the latch mechanism in the door edge.

  • Ensure the hole is centered and deep enough for the latch to fit snugly.

Step 4. Install Latch #

Insert the latch into the drilled hole and secure it with screws. Ensure the latch is flush with the door edge.

  • Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws securely.

Step 5. Mark Strike Plate Location #

Close the door and mark the strike plate location on the door jamb, ensuring alignment with the latch.

  • Use a pencil to mark the top and bottom of the latch.

Step 6. Mortise for Strike Plate #

Use a chisel to create a mortise in the door jamb for the strike plate to sit flush.

  • The strike side is where a pocket door differs from a swing door. The jamb gets mortised for the locking strike plate: trace the plate, then cut to its thickness so it sits flush.

Step 7. Install Strike Plate #

Position the strike plate in the mortise and secure it with screws.

  • Check for proper alignment with the latch.

Step 8. Test Operation #

Open and close the door to ensure the latch engages smoothly with the strike plate.

  • Adjust as necessary for smooth operation.

Pro Tips #

Pro Tip: "Check if there are any pocket doors that need privacy latches."

Pro Tip: "Ensure that the strike plate is cut in for pocket doors to function properly."

Pro Tip: Use pocket door hardware that includes plastic wedges for better installation.

Common Mistakes #

  • Mistake: Misaligned latch and strike plate. Fix by adjusting the strike plate position for smooth latch engagement.
  • Mistake: Insufficient mortise depth for the strike plate. Ensure the mortise is deep enough for the plate to sit flush with the jamb.

QC / Punch Checklist #

  • Verify that the latch engages smoothly with the strike plate.
  • Ensure all screws are tight and components are secure.
  • Check that the door slides smoothly and does not bind.
