Introduction #
A locker bench is a built-in bench with a row of coat hooks mounted above it, most often built into a mudroom or a back entry off the garage. The customer sits on it to pull off boots, hangs a coat and a bag overhead, and it usually ties into whatever trim or shiplap package surrounds it.
This is the Standard guide, covering the hook-board-only version of the upper section. If the customer wants divided cubby storage in addition to the hooks, see the Variant guide, Install a Locker Bench with Cubbies, which builds out a full cubby box above the same bench, but the hook rail still goes in, under the cubbies. It does not replace the hooks.
The single most important concept is load. Both the bench seat and the hook rail carry real weight once someone sits down or hangs a loaded coat and backpack. Every point where this unit meets the wall needs a stud behind it, and every miter in the face frame needs to be tight and glued so the whole assembly reads as one built piece instead of three separate projects nailed to a wall.
Before You Begin #
Prerequisites #
- Drywall is complete.
- Flooring is installed and protected; the bench sits directly on the finished floor.
- Any surrounding trim package, shiplap or wainscot included, is planned so its heights and reveals line up with the bench before you cut anything.
- The wall behind the locker location is verified plumb and level.
What You Need To Know #
- The bench box and the hook rail both carry real load. Every attachment point needs a stud behind it. Confirm with a stud finder before you commit to a layout.
- We plan every job for drywall. Glue plus fastening into studs is the default. If the framer left a plywood or OSB backer where the locker goes, that is a bonus for us, and it means we fasten straight to it and skip the glue.
- Wood-to-wood joints, like where the face frame meets itself at a miter, or where the bench top meets the frame, are ours to glue, putty, and sand. Nail holes are not ours; those stay for the painter.
- Glue every miter and do not cross-nail one. A tight, glued miter with a liberal amount of glue holds better on this kind of assembly than fighting the joint with an angled brad.
Tools Required #
Power Tools #
- Table saw or track saw, for breaking down plywood panels.
- Miter saw, for the face frame and hook rail stock.
- A 15-gauge finish nailer, for the bench frame and back cleat into wall studs.
- An 18-gauge brad nailer, for the face frame and box assembly.
- Drill/driver.
- A compressor for the pneumatic nailers, or charged battery packs if running cordless guns.

Supplies #
- 15-gauge 2-1/2 inch finish nails, for the back cleat into studs.
- 18-gauge 1-3/4 inch brad nails, for the face frame and box assembly.
- PVA wood glue, for every miter and every wood-to-wood joint.
- Edge banding, for exposed plywood edges.
Materials #
- 3/4 inch cabinet-grade plywood, for the bench box, seat, and any internal partitions.
- 1x hardwood or MDF, for the face frame. MDF for paint-grade, hardwood for stain-grade.
- 1x4 or 1x6 stock, for the hook rail board.
- Coat hooks, customer or GC supplied unless the job spec has us providing them.
How to Install a Locker Bench with Hooks Step by Step #
Step 1: Lay Out the Bench and Hook Rail Heights #
Mark the finished floor line, then mark the bench seat height and the hook rail height on the wall from the layout plan. A bench seat commonly lands in the 17 to 19 inch range; confirm the exact height against this job's plan rather than assuming. Snap a chalk line for the back cleat that will carry the bench top, and another for the hook rail mounting board.
Step 2: Build the Bench Box #
Cut the plywood sides, bottom, and any internal dividers on the table saw. Assemble the box with glue and 18-gauge brads, checking every corner for square before the glue sets. Cut and install a back cleat, sized and fastened the same way as a closet shelf cleat, using 15-gauge 2-1/2 inch nails into studs. This cleat carries the load into the wall; do not rely on the box sides alone.
Step 3: Set the Bench Box and Fasten to the Wall #
Slide the box into position on the back cleat and against the side walls. Level it front to back and side to side, then fasten through the box back into any studs it crosses in addition to the cleat.
Step 4: Cut and Install the Bench Top #
Cut the bench top to the finished width and depth, allowing for any face frame that will wrap the front edge. Glue and brad-nail the top to the box. If the top has a mitered front edge or nosing, glue that miter; do not cross-nail it.
Step 5: Build and Install the Face Frame #
Cut the face frame stock to fit the box opening, mitering the corners. Glue every miter joint and hold it tight while you brad-nail it to the box front with 18-gauge 1-3/4 inch brads. Edge-band any exposed plywood edge the face frame does not cover.
Step 6: Install the Hook Rail #
Cut the hook rail board to length, gluing any miter at the ends if it returns into a side wall. Fasten the rail to the wall along your chalk line with 15-gauge nails into studs; this board carries real weight once coats and bags are hanging on it, so do not skip a stud. Lay out and drill the hook locations, spacing them evenly across the rail based on the customer's hook count.
Close-Out #
Set every fastener head below the surface and stop there. Filling, caulking, and finish sanding are the painter's scope. Leave the wood-to-wood joints glued, puttied, and sanded, and leave the nail holes for the painter's pass. Sweep the area; we sweep, we do not shop vac. Confirm the hook hardware is either installed or staged if it ships separately from the trim package.
Quality Check #
- Bench is level front to back and side to side
- Back cleat and box are fastened into studs, not drywall alone
- Every miter is glued and tight, with no cross-nailing
- Wood-to-wood joints are glued, puttied, and sanded
- Hook rail is level and fastened into studs at every load point
- Exposed plywood edges are edge-banded or otherwise finished
- Area is swept clean
Troubleshooting #
Bench Rocks or Isn't Level #
Cause: the back cleat or a box corner missed level, or the finished floor is not flat under the bench.
Fix: recheck the cleat with a 4-foot level before trusting the box on top of it. If the floor itself is out of level, that is a shim-and-scribe problem at the base trim, not something to fix by forcing the box.
Hook Rail Pulls Away From the Wall #
Cause: one or more fasteners missed the stud.
Fix: pull the rail, re-locate studs with a stud finder and a probe, and refasten. Do not add more brads into drywall to compensate; that only spreads the failure point.
Face Frame Miter Opens Up #
Cause: not enough glue, or the joint was nailed before the glue had a chance to pull it tight.
Fix: re-glue the joint, hold or clamp it tight, and let it set before nailing. A liberal amount of glue on a tight-fitting miter holds without needing to cross-nail it.
